040 - Race car clockwork

Race car inscription

These cars were of the same shape and size as the 031 pre-war edition but little technical changes have been done. Still clockwork driven, however the 5th wheel was no longer "retractable". The cars were now available in the colors Red, Blue, Silver and Beige, numbered from 1 through 12. The inscription was "BILLER TOY" on the hood and the corresponding starting number. Right side, below the number, the inscription was as shown on top of this page. The key was different to the otherwise known Biller keys. Available from 1949.

This car is known to have 2 different clockwork constructions. First version is as the pre-war version - with a to the bottom fixed clockwork - and the 5th wheel is moveable. These cars have a round key-hole. The extra wheel is placed close to the steerable front axle.

The presumably later version has the 5th wheel fixed to the clockwork - therefore the clockwork is moving up and down. These cars have an oval key-hole - and the extra wheel is placed close to the middle of the base. Furthermore this version has small recesses in the superstructure overhead the rear axle.

Following color combinations are known: entirely Silver or Cream with red drivers cab - starting number direct on superstructure's color, Blue or Red with Cream wheel houses and driver cabs - starting number on Cream square. The combinations Red / Silver or Blue / Silver, as known at the 031 post-war race cars, have not been identified with this version.

Similar shaped cars available in various colors made by several companies.

Length: 155 mm

Most probably 4 pre-production samples. At least 2 of them (the yellowish ones) never made their way to be produced. The "Blue 5" is a 031 post-war - the "Beige 3" a clockwork driven post-war 040
